Watering Right in July Heat: How to Protect Your Plants Through Dry Spells and Heavy Rain

If you have been outside lately, you already know Eastern North Carolina weather has been keeping us on our toes. One week we are watching our gardens dry up and hoping for rain. The next week we are getting enough rain to fill every bucket in the yard.

Both situations can be tough on your plants.

Knowing when to water, how much to water, and what to do when the weather changes can make a big difference in keeping your garden healthy through the summer.

During a dry spell, your plants are not just thirsty. Their roots are working harder to find moisture, and the heat can quickly pull water away from the soil.

One of the biggest mistakes gardeners make is giving their plants a little water every day. A quick sprinkle may wet the top of the soil, but it does not always reach where the roots need it.

Instead, focus on deep watering.

A slow, steady watering allows moisture to move deeper into the soil and encourages roots to grow downward. Stronger roots help plants handle hot days and dry conditions better.

Early morning is the best time to water because your plants have time to soak it in before the afternoon heat arrives. If mornings do not work, evening watering is okay, just try not to leave plants sitting wet overnight.

Do not always rely on how the leaves look. Sometimes by the time a plant is wilted, it is already stressed.

A simple trick is to check the soil. Stick your finger a few inches down near the base of your plant. If the soil feels dry, it is time to water.

Container plants, hanging baskets, and newly planted flowers will need attention more often because they dry out much faster than plants growing in the ground.

When rain is nowhere in sight, there are a few things you can do to help your plants hold onto moisture.

Mulch is one of your garden’s best friends during hot weather. A layer of mulch helps keep the soil cooler, protects roots, and slows down evaporation.

Water near the base of the plant instead of spraying the whole plant. Your roots are what need the drink.

Also, avoid watering during the hottest part of the day. Much of that water can disappear before your plants ever get a chance to use it.

After a dry stretch, a big rain can feel like a blessing. Your plants will appreciate the moisture, but too much water too quickly can create new problems.

Roots need water, but they also need oxygen. When soil stays soaked for too long, roots can struggle and plants can become more likely to develop problems.

After heavy rain, check your garden.

Look for standing water around plants and containers that are holding too much moisture. Make sure pots have good drainage and move containers if they are sitting in water.

You may also notice yellowing leaves after too much rain. This does not always mean your plant needs fertilizer. Sometimes it simply means the roots have been too wet.

Healthy soil helps your plants handle both dry weather and heavy rain.

Adding compost and organic matter helps sandy soils hold moisture longer and helps heavier soils drain better. Good soil gives your roots the environment they need to stay strong.

Water early in the morning when possible

Add mulch to help protect roots and hold moisture
